ALD differs from the majority of bottom-up deposition techniques in that it is a sequential deposition technique. In ALD, the film or coating is built up from two separate precursor materials, and these precursors are not present in the reaction chamber at the same time. In essence, a sequential deposition approach is also a form of layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition method since one of these precursor materials is deposited first, followed by the other precursor material.
The surface reactions that take place in the reaction chamber are what cause the film or coating to form. Prior to being deposited, the precursor materials are vaporized in a regulated temperature range. The initial precursor material is introduced into the reaction chamber, where the entire surface is uniformly coated with it. Chemical bonds between the molecules create a totally bonded covering layer. The second precursor material is then applied on top of the first coating layer after this layer has been deposited, and the second layer bonds to both the first coating layer and itself. The procedure is carried out repeatedly in order to give the film or coating the necessary thickness.
