Market Report Description

The Europe Audiobooks Market would witness market growth of 25.4% CAGR during the forecast period (2022-2028).

In 1955, a German inventor invented the Sound Book cassette system based on the Tefifon format, where the sound was recorded on a continuous loop of grooved Vinylite ribbon, comparable to the older 8-track tape. Even though the original Tefifon, upon which the Sound Book was based, operated at 19 CPS and could contain a maximum of four hours of recordings, one Sound Book could store eight hours of audio since it ran at half the speed or 9.5 CPS.

However, similar to the Tefifon, the format was never widely adopted. A small number of novels are often reduced and sometimes serialized for radio broadcasting. Sometimes audiobooks are completely dramatized copies of the printed book, employing a full cast, music, and sound effects.

These audiobooks, which are essentially audio plays, are known as full-cast audio novels. Radio 3, Radio 4, and Radio 4 Extra of the BBC have broadcast such works as William Gibson's novel Neuromancer.  Audio first production is an original spoken word audio production that is not based on a book. In 2018, Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King, published a Vinyl First audiobook entitled Dark Carousel.

The development and use of audiobooks in Germany closely resemble those in the United States. The 1955 founding of the West German Audio Book Library for the Blind is a prime example of its application. In an improvised studio lined with egg cartons, actors from Münster's municipal theatre recorded the first audiobooks for the visually handicapped. Due to the proximity of the trams, these early performances took held at night.
